Jenny Lewis Enters Her ‘Nashville Skyline’ Phase on New Album ‘Joy’All’

The indie rock icon drops the cosmic country kiss "Psychos" and releases his fifth LP

We had a QUICK  report on Jenny Lewis' yacht rock era in 2021 when she released the beautiful pedal steel-filled weirdo 'Puppy and the Truck'. But Lewis moved on - to Nashville, to be exact.

The singer-songwriter released the new single "Psychos," the lead off his upcoming album Joy'All, on June 9 via his new label Blue Note/Capitol Records. "There are no hard feelings," he casually declares in the blissful chorus. "How can I  help you? / It's time to escape."

Joy'All marks Lewis' fifth solo album, following the excellent On the Line, which he released in 2019. "I started writing some of these songs on the road, pre-pandemic... and then scrapped them when the world shut down," he said in a statement. "And then in early 2021, from my home in Nashville, I joined a week-long virtual writing workshop hosted by Beck with a handful of amazing artists. The challenge was to write one song a day for seven days, following Beck's instructions. instructions would be, 'write a song 1-4-5 chords', 'write a song with only clichés' or 'write in the free form'. The first song I sent to the band was "Puppy and the Truck".

Lewis hired Dave Cobb to produce the record and channeled Skeeter Davis for the album cover after finding one of her costumes in a  thrift store in Nashville. "Dave works fast and we cut most of the record with his incredible house band - Nate Smith, Brian Allen and Cobb on guitar and me on acoustic guitar and vocals - live over two weeks. Jess Wolfe came back into the studio to play backing vocals on the record and then added pedal steel, B-Bender guitar and Chamberlin respectively in Los Angeles by Greg Leisz and Jon Brion.

Lewis will tour in support of the record this summer, starting with a concert in early June, followed by treks to Beck and Phoenix. In the fall, he will embark on Ben Gibbard's double anniversary tour with Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service.
